Hope this is the right place to post.
I have 2 pairs of platinums that spawn all the time , age is estimated at 10-11 months. Problem is , maybe you only get about 5 % fertile. I know its not the water , as i have 3 spawns going at the moment , could it be that platinum males take longer to mature? Water is ph 5.5, temp 83 water 75 ms.these conditions work well with my other pairs , and discus , i do add a touch of salt to get the tds up to 250 which really helps the hatch rate .strange i know , but it does help Any ideas????/ Sid |

Hi Sid,
Since the females are laying eggs then it's proof they are fertile. i suspect the males are likely fertile as well producing sperm but, speculating, perhaps these Plats are highly in bred and are carrying deleterious genes. The eggs are being fertilized but because of the deleterious genes the embryos die. In mammals, I've read that when the male is in bred too much there are cases where the sperm produced are deformed and are not able to swim and enter and fertilize the egg. Cross the plats, both males and females to another non related strain/variant to see if they can successfully produce offspring.
