About a week ago I was called by a woman who's daughter (6yrs old) purchased some angels from a "Big Box" chain pet store. They purchased 6 and when they called me they had 3 left. The Mom and daughter brought them to me and these fish were really sick. You could see the white poop and the fish were not eating. I put them in a spare 10 gal. and started them on metro flake. Meanwhile I ordered some Fenbenadole powder and Metro powder from Jehmco. Well, they really didn't eat much of the metro flake. Also they didn't really look much better when the meds arrived yesterday. I read where I should mix the Fenbenzadole into the food. Well if they won't eat whats the point. So I tried to dissolve it into some water. STUPID STUPID STUPID. Anyway, I went forward with it. I shook the crap out of it and using a 60cc syringe, put some in the tank. umm again, STUPID STUPID STUPID!!!!!!. After the cloud settled (about an hour) I figured to find 3 dead fish. Well after 6 hours the fish are still alive and, well, they don't look any worse!! In fact, (being optimistic here) they may look a bit better.
Surely some of it is getting into their systems!! Won't it eventually get into the water?? I should have removed the sponge filter too. STUPID STUPID STUPID!!!!!!!!!! When the owners left the first day, I told the lil girl if her fish didn't survive she could pick some from what I have. She seemed to like that idea. hmmmm...evil little girl probably already had this planned out J/K LOLOL So, now what SHOULD I have done here. Also, if I put the Fenbendazone in with the flake..how much?? Can I get a liquid form of Fenbendazole?? oh well, another lesson learned (sigh)

fluebendazole is what you use in the water and no they just do not disolve well. The discus site has a lot of warnings about using what you bought in the water. It really is not for a bath.
When you ever deside to invest in fluebendazole for a bath, the directions are to get some water near boil stage in a GLASS container. Add the fluebendazole and stir until it mixes up better. Then add that cooled down a little to the tank you are treating. Charles the inkmaker has the fluebendazole and so does Plymouth discus in England. Charles has the 10% and Plymouth has the 5% which I doubledose to makeup for the lower percent. It is very easy to get those two mixed up. It took me ages to remember it correctly. But it is one of my favorite quaranteen tools. |

no don't boil the water with the medication in it. Just get the plain water near boil and mix it in. I don't know if this works for that one, but that is the instructions for the fluebendazole. Two different drugs so I don't know if it will work for what you have.

that is still the stuff you are not supposed to put in for a bath. It is exactly what you have now but in liquid form. And honestly I don't have a clue how to use that. It does not disolve well so you have to wonder what they put in it to make it work.

Well I give up. The fish are alive but not looking to good and not eating. I can't seem to do anything about it. I called the Mother up and told her to come by and get a couple fish to replace these.

I sorry it doesn't look like you are curing them, but once you get the water without the drugs in it you can always do the metro and heat treatment. YOu can do the heat now and see if that helps.

I decided to euthanize them. I think it was for the best.
Thanks every one

Well I think MY fish are on the mend. Although I did lose a couple. Their mates are still a bit droopy. I don't think it's sickness related though. This my be my imagination but I think they are just lonely.
I might just put them together. The male is huge, but gentle. I don't think he'll bother the smaller female. We'll see what happens.

Don;t feel bad Ben, I've had a lot of cases where try as I did, nothing helped - advice from respected people, medication ads, and all. I've been an angelfish breeder for almost 40 yrs. now and still hate euthanizing them though reservations and all still do anyhow. Anyway, those that have been sick for the longest time then all of a sudden miraculously cured, may have gotten ravaged by the disease is such a way that they end up nonetheless a ticking timebomb.
In analogy I had 2 bulldogs that had the same problem, they puffed up like they swallowed soccer balls and we found out they had congestive heart failure (typical of the breed). Docs said put them down, we didn't. Found a "cure" after having spent a fortune on medical bills. They were fine for sometime then they died 3 months of each other, just like that. No further symptoms. |

I procrastinate culling. Then when my wife is not around I do it.
So sorry about you dogs. I think it's tougher with animals that we have more personal interaction with.
